This book traces the history of one of the UK’s leading museums, from its origins in the 1816 bequest by Richard Viscount Fitzwilliam, up to the present day. At the same time it sets the Fitzwilliam’s individual story against the larger context of the growth of museums and galleries across the nation. Drawing on previously unpublished resources and archives it tells the changing story of one of Cambridge’s most beloved institutions.
